The cruelest lies are often told in silence. A man may have sat in a room for hours and not opened his mouth, and yet come out of that room a disloyal friend or a vile calumniator.

"The cruelest lies are often told in silence." This sentence has deep meaning that everyone might not understand including me....It's sometimes hard to tell the truth and the lies...when people cannot speak a word, silence will do....

I like the quotation....thanks

Sometimes we remain silent just to protect ourselves. Most of the time, for the reason of “don’t want to cause another pain for someone”, remaining silent is much better. Just my thoughts…

from which work this quote is taken? or is it really a quote from his words? I have never read his works unless Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde, but I didn't notice this quote in that story.

Actually, I have never read his works but in my opinion, silence is not always good. Silence will not be able to resolve the problem, sometimes a person thinks that with silence he would not hurt the feelings of others but this is very wrong, because the silence would lead to a misunderstanding.
